What is the Mental Health Workplace Course?

The Mental Health First Aid in the Workplace course combines an online component with a half-day of face-to-face training.

The main focus of the course is teaching people how to help colleagues who are having mental health issues. Participants should gain improved knowledge about mental health conditions as well as the confidence to support a co-worker.

The first part of the course is the online component. Since it’s online, you can do this part of the course at your own pace. It’s an overview of the sort of mental health problems that people are likely to suffer from such as depression or anxiety. Following that, there is face-to-face group training, which gives you the chance to address the workplace mental health issues raised online in more depth.

The Online Learning component

Online, we cover developing mental health problems as well as mental health crises.  Specifically, the mental health problems covered are:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Substance abuse

There is also material about mental health crises and how to deal with them. For example, we cover:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Traumatic events
  • Self harm
  • Panic attacks
  • Severe psychosis
  • Severe effects from alcohol or drugs
  • Aggressive behaviour

The Workplace Mental Health Face-to-face session

During the face-to-face training, you will revise the online information and apply the knowledge to issues that are relevant to your workplace. It’s also a great opportunity to clarify anything you are uncertain about. More than that, it’s an important time to discuss how to use your fresh mental health first aid skills in the workplace. It could be the time that you decide that in addition to a First Aid Officer, a Mental Health First Aid Officer is the right idea.

Accreditation

If you want to become a Mental Health First Aid Officer you can go on to complete an online Accreditation Assessment. If you are successful, you will receive a Mental Health First Aider Certificate of Accreditation that is valid for 3 years. Otherwise, you will get a Certificate of Completion. The course is accredited through Mental Health First Aid Australia.
