What is the Youth Mental Health First Aid Course?
The Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMFA) course is ideal for anyone who works or lives with adolescents, particularly teachers. It covers all the content included in the standard MHFA course, but with an emphasis on how to apply it to adolescents. The course also specifically covers adolescent development and physiology, including mental health issues in teens such as eating disorders. It also takes a more in-depth look at drug and alcohol (substance) abuse.
The Youth MHFA course includes the following:
- Signs, symptoms and risk factors associated with common mental health issues
- Mental Health First Aid action plan – ALGEE
- How to approach and assess the situation
- When and how to intervene
- What to say and what not to say
Mental Health Issues Covered
- Substance use problems – drugs and alcohol
- Eating disorders
Mental Health Crisis Covered
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non-suicidal self-injury
- Panic attacks
- Severe psychotic states
- Severe effects of drug and alcohol use
- Aggressive behaviours
Basically, we deliver the course face-to-face over 14 hours. Because it is a long course, we are flexible in the way it is delivered. So you can do it quickly over 2 days or spread it out over 3 days or even 1 or 2 weeks.
After that, every participant will receive a copy of the Youth MHFA Manual and a Certificate of Completion.
Youth MHFA is open to anyone aged over 18, but anyone form 15v to 18 can do our Teen Mental Health First Aid.
Because your health and safety are our highest priority, infection control measures and COVID-19 practices are applied across all of our training facilities. Please remember if you are unwell or experiencing any symptoms we ask that you contact us to reschedule your training. If you need further information, then please email [email protected].
Certification & Accreditation
We issue a Certificate of Completion on the final day of the course. What’s more, the YMHFA course is accredited directly through Mental Health First Aid Australia who will send you a link to take a short accreditation assessment.
The accreditation assessment, although not timed, usually takes between 15-30 minutes to complete and consists of 15 multiple-choice questions. Unlike some courses, the assessment is open book so you can refer to your YMHFA manual if needed.
Finally, accreditation lasts for 3 years and allows you to be appointed as a Mental Health First Aid Officer.
