What is the Teen Mental Health First Aid Course?
Basically, the Teen MHFA course (TMHFA) raises awareness of mental health issues in high school students. It also enables them to provide some support to friends suffering from a mental health issue.
The course is important because the latest mental health research suggests that young people prefer to share their problems with peers. So by providing teens with an understanding of mental health issues, problems can be identified early. Since teens are best placed to know about the issues their peers are having, teaching them how to recognise mental health issues can help with early intervention. As well as this, there is training in how to talk to friends having problems.
Although the course is for high school kids, we recommend it for older teens in years 10,11 and 12. Generally, the teaching happens in schools, but other community organisations or sports clubs can easily be the venue.
