What is the Standard Mental Health First Aid Course?

Basically, the Standard MHFA course is ideal for anyone who wants to understand more about mental health issues. It covers things such as how they affect people, their signs and symptoms along with how to help a sufferer.

Being that the course is internationally recognised and used throughout the world, you can rest assured that it is well worth doing. And that’s because it is predicated on evidenced-based research and global best practice.

The course not only provides a good understanding of how to recognise the signs that someone may be suffering from a mental health condition, but will give you the practical skills you need to step in and help. Through a series of case studies, group work and role-plays you’ll learn exactly how to approach a person to discuss mental health issues. So you’ll know what to say and what not to say.  As well as this, we’ll give you the MHFA manual, which covers all the mental health conditions, signs & symptoms, interventions and other helpful resources.

Course Format

Face-to-Face Worshop

We deliver the course face-to-face over 12 hours. Because the course is so long, delivery is flexible and the course can take 2 or 3 days, depending on organisational needs.

In addition, every participant will receive a copy of the Standard MHFA Manual and a Certificate of Completion.

eLearning – Blended MHFA Courses

Firstly, the Blended MHFA course involves around 8 hours of self-paced online study. This is followed by 4 hours of face-to-face practical learning with our trainers. So it is ideal for those who have limited time to spend away from the workplace or prefer to study at their own pace.

Prior Learning

Standard MHFA is open to anyone aged 18 or older.

Covid-19 Precautions

Because your health and safety are our highest priority, we apply infection control measures and COVID-19 practices across all of our training facilities. Please remember if you are unwell or experiencing any symptoms, then we ask that you contact us to reschedule your training. For further information please email courses@firstaidpro.com.au.

Certification & Accreditation

Generally, we issue you a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course. MHFA is accredited directly through Mental Health First Aid Australia. Once you complete the course, Mental Health First Aid Australia will send you a link to take the short accreditation assessment.

The accreditation assessment consists of 15 multiple-choice questions. The assessment is open book so you can refer to your MHFA manual if you need to.

Accreditation lasts for 3 years and allows you to be appointed as a Mental Health First Aid Officer in the workplace.
